Message From Chester & District Chess League Mailing List

A brief update on how the league is going so far.

Division 1:

Wrexham 1 are champions once again with one game to spare, following a 3.5 - 1.5 win over second place Colwyn Bay. The team have recovered from an early scare including a surprise 3-2 home defeat by Rhyl.

At the other end of the table Rhyl 1 currently sit on 2 points, with Buckley/Mold just ahead on 2.5 points. The two teams meet tonight in what looks to be a relegation battle.

Top scorer is Richard Dineley on 8/9, and by my calculation cannot be caught.

Division 2:

It is a lot closer in Division 2. Frodsham currently lead with 6 points from 9, with Colwyn Bay 2 on 5 points from 9. Sitting closely behind are Chester 2 and Capenhurst both on 5 points from 10.

At the other end, Buckley/Mold 2 on 3 points from 9, with Chester 3 a point ahead and a game in hand. Holywell have 5 points from 11 games but have a -10 points difference, and by my visual calculation must win their final game against Buckley/Mold 2.

The top scorer charts are also very close. Leading currently are Stephen Williams (Holywell) and Mike Driscoll (Capenhurst) both on 6.5 points, though Stephen has played 1 game more. Sitting close behind are a number of players on 6 points.

Division 3:

Wrexham 2 lead on 7/10 ahead of Penyffordd 2 on 6/10, and Chester 4 and Rhyl 2 both on 5.5/10. The battle to not finish last is between Corwen & Ruthin (2/8) and Chester 5 (3/8). Both teams have yet to meet this season.

The leading players are Mike Friel (Penyffordd 2) and Ben Roberts (Rhyl 2), both on 6.5/9. Bill Davies (Wrexham 2) and Jim Hanson (Buckley/Mold) sit close behind on 6 points.

Knock Out:

Wrexham are though to the final and will be at home to either Capenhurst or Penyffordd.
