London Chess Classic

The Second London Chess Classic will be held in December. For details, click here.

Frodsham 2.5 - 2.5 Buckley Mold 2.

Last night the second team drew away to Frodsham in the Chester & District second division. The game hung on the last 10 minutes. At that stage we were leading 2-1 (2 wins and a loss). Board two looked to be a draw when he unfortunately dropped a knight and couldn't hang on in the endgame. Board 5 had swung both ways, but our man seemed to be losing but held on to draw a rook ending a pawn down.

A joke...

A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing around in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. About an hour later the manager comes out of his office and asked them to disperse. "But why?", they asked as they moved along. "Because," said the manager, "I can't stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer."

Colwyn Bay 1 2.5 - 2.5 Buckley Mold 1

Our newly promoted first team drew away to Colwyn Bay in the Chester & District Division 1. Colwyn Bay came third last season, so we feel that is a good result to get the new season underway.

Club Championship 2010 - 2011

This years Club Championship will be played in two groups, A and B. The A group is for those graded 130 and above; the B group is for those graded below 130. The games can be played between now and the end of April 2011. In May 2011 we will arrange semifinals and a final for the two top players in each group, so those in group B may yet be the overall champion.

The scoring in the league will be 3 points for a win, two for a draw and one for a loss. This favours players who play but lose over those who do not play their games. It is your responsibility to arrange matches with your opponents. The more of your games you get played, the more points you score, and the better chance you have of winning the title!

The time limit is the same as the league matches we play: 75 minutes for 35 moves, and the rest of the game in a further 15 minutes. Games will be graded with the ECF.

There is scope for new players to join in. If that happens, I will update the fixture list to include them.

Results and tables will appear on the club noticeboard and here at the website.

Please let me know all results. I can be contacted by phone, email, or through the website.

President of FIDE has met aliens.

This is the substance of a report from the BBC:

A Russian MP has asked President Dmitry Medvedev to investigate claims by a regional president that he has met aliens on board a spaceship. Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the leader of the southern region of Kalymkia, made his claim in a television interview.

MP Andre Lebedev is not just asking whether Mr Ilyumzhinov is fit to govern. He is also concerned that, if he was abducted, he may have revealed details about his job and state secrets.
The MP has written a letter to Mr Medvedev raising a list of his concerns.

In his letter he says that - assuming the whole thing was not just a bad joke - it was an historic event and should have been reported to the Kremlin. He also asks if there are official guidelines for what government officials should do if contacted by aliens, especially if those officials have access to state secrets.

Mr Ilyumzhinov said in an interview on primetime television that he had been taken on board an alien spaceship which had come to planet Earth to take samples - and claims to have several witnesses.

He has been president of Kalmykia, a small Buddhist region of Russia which lies on the shores of the Caspian Sea, for 17 years. The millionaire former businessman has a reputation as an eccentric character. As president of the World Chess Federation, he has spent tens of millions of dollars turning the impoverished republic into a mecca for chess players - building an entire village to host international tournaments.

Liam Jefferies
League Controller
22nd April 2010

Caergwrle 1 3.5 - 1.5 Buckley Mold 1

Caergwrle beat Buckley Mold on the night in their Wirral Division 1 match, but the result will be challenged due to Caergwrle playing their team out of order by playing a player graded 129 above a player graded 165. Results from the Wirral league show clearly that there is no justification for the switch.

This means Buckley Mold are champions of Divisions 2 and 3 !!!!

Buckley Mold 2 3.5-1.5 Hoylake 2

Buckley Mold 2 finish their season in the Wirral division 2 with a win.

Buckley Mold 1 2-3 Frodsham

Buckley Mold lose their rearranged match against Frodsham in the Chester & District 2nd division.

Buckley Mold 2 4-1 Caergwrle 2

A controversial result in the Wirral League Division 2. On the night, Buckley Mold won 4-1, including a point for a Caergwrle player who did not turn up. However the game should have been played away to Caergwrle.

After a complaint, the League controller ruled as follows:

Having consulted with the assistant controller my decision and comments are as follows:

1. Buckley Mold are in default by not attending the scheduled fixture at Caergwrle.

2. The game played at Buckley Mold is null and void for league purposes as it was not played at the correct venue. However the games played will be counted for grading purposes.

3. Caergwrle have agreed to reschedule the game and accordingly I would allow a 14 day extension to the league season for this fixture to be re-arranged giving a final deadline of 14th May 2010.

However, I understand that in view of the decisive nature of the original result, Buckley Mold may not play the game a second time.
